Laparoscopic Surgery : A Minimally Invasive Approach

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery (MIS) or keyhole surgery, is a modern surgical technique that allows surgeons to operate with minimal incisions. Instead of making large cuts, surgeons use small incisions and a camera (called a laparoscope) to view the inside of the body on a monitor, making it a safer and faster alternative to traditional open surgery.

How Laparoscopic Surgery Works

The procedure involves :-

  1. Small Incisions : Typically, 3-4 incisions less than 1 cm in size are made near the surgical site.
  2. Inserting the Laparoscope : A thin tube with a camera and light (laparoscope) is inserted through one of the incisions, projecting a magnified image onto a monitor.
  3. Surgical Instruments : Specialized instruments are inserted through the other incisions to perform the surgery.
  4. Gas Insufflation : Carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate the abdomen, providing more space for the surgeon to operate and ensuring a clear view of the organs.
  5. Performing the Surgery : The surgeon uses the images from the laparoscope to guide the instruments and perform the required procedure.
  6. Closing the Incisions : After the surgery is completed, the gas is released, and the small incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue.

Who Can Benefit from Laparoscopic Surgery ?

Laparoscopic surgery is ideal for patients with conditions that can be treated through minimally invasive techniques, and those who wish to avoid the long recovery times associated with open surgery. However, not all patients are suitable candidates. Factors like obesity, prior surgeries, or complicated medical conditions may require open surgery instead.
