Arthroscopic Surgery : A Minimally Invasive Procedure for Joint Repair

Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat joint problems. By using a small camera called an arthroscope, surgeons can view the inside of the joint on a screen and perform the necessary treatments through tiny incisions, reducing recovery time and minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues.

How Arthroscopic Surgery Works

The procedure involves the following steps :

  1. Small Incisions :- Tiny incisions (about the size of a buttonhole) are made near the affected joint.
  2. Inserting the Arthroscope :- A thin tube with a camera and light (arthroscope) is inserted into the joint through one of the incisions. This provides a clear, magnified view of the inside of the joint.
  3. Using Surgical Instruments :- Specialized tools are inserted through other small incisions to perform the necessary repairs or treatments, such as removing damaged tissue or repairing torn structures.
  4. Completing the Surgery :- Once the procedure is complete, the instruments and arthroscope are removed, and the incisions are closed with stitches or surgical tape.

Recovery After Arthroscopic Surgery

Recovery times vary depending on the joint and the procedure performed. Key aspects of recovery include :

  • Pain Management : Mild pain and discomfort at the incision sites are common and can be managed with pain medications.
  • Physical Therapy : Rehabilitation exercises are essential to regain strength, flexibility, and function in the joint. Your surgeon will recommend a personalized physical therapy program to ensure a full recovery.
  • Return to Activities : Patients can typically resume light activities within a few weeks. However, full recovery may take several months, especially for complex procedures like ACL reconstruction or rotator cuff repair.
